Treasurer Gets Club off to Marathon Start
04 Jun 2009 20:10

Chapeltown Amateur Swimming club is looking forward to installing new starting blocks after its treasurer, Claire Chapman, completed the London Marathon raising sponsorship of £481.97 in the process. That figure was then doubled thanks to the generosity of Chesterfield based Line One Sales Limited who had agreed to match the funds Claire raised, giving a total of £963.94 which Claire handed to the club earlier this week.

Chapeltown swimming club has been training swimmers and competing in local competitions since 1960 at its home pool, Chapeltown Baths. The club is run by parents/volunteers and relies on fund raising to maintain and replace pool equipment, training essentials, and items in its own gym. The club has been looking to replace its ageing starting blocks for some time.

Tom Barlow, chairman of the club, was delighted with Claire’s achievement, “Claire rightfully got a huge round of applause at our last club meeting, we’re all extremely grateful to Claire, and to Line One, for raising such important funds for the club. Hopefully we can reflect this by putting their names on the new starting blocks.”

Claire, whose daughter Billy, swims for the club, completed the marathon in 4 hours and 27 minutes.

Chapeltown Swimming Club has trained at Chapeltown Baths since 1960 and is open to anyone age 8+ from all areas including Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham.
