The first day of the asa swim21 National Age Group Championships got off to a flying start for City of Leeds’ Matthew Johnson. He won three gold medals on day one, in the boys 13 years 1500m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 200m Butterfly, the latter in a new British Age Group Record time of 2:08.45. Phoebe Lenderyou of City of Sunderland SC also had a successful day, winning the 12 year old girls 400m IM and placing second in the 100m Backstroke. Daniel Marshall of Borough of Stockton SC won the 11 year old boys 200m Butterfly. There were third places for Ryan Newsome of City of Leeds SC in the 13 year old boys 1500m Freestyle and for Joshua Jones of Cleethorpes & Scunthorpe SC in the boys 11 years 100m Breaststroke.
Day Two of the Championships saw more winning performances from North East swimmers. Danielle Hall-Jackson of City of Leeds SC won the girls 13 years 800m Freestyle, with Rachael Williamson of Kingston-upon-Hull SC in second place. Matthew Johnson (City of Leeds SC) continued in winning ways with first place in the boys 13 years 400m IM and 200m Freestyle. Phoebe Lenderyou (City of Sunderland SC) won the girls 12 years 200m Butterfly. In the boys 11 years events, Daniel Marshall (Borough of Stockton SC) won the 100m Backstroke and came second in the 200m Freestyle. Perry Gardner (Middlesboro SC) came second in the 11 years 100m Backstroke and 400m IM. Alexandra Jackson (Borough of Stockton SC) came third in the girls 11 years 800m Freestyle and Molly Grayson of City of Leeds SC came third in the 12 years age group. Bradley Dobson of Peterlee was third in the boys 12 years 200m Freestyle, and the boys team from City of Leeds finished third in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay.
The asa swim21 National Age Group Championships continued at Ponds Forge on Saturday, with many North East swimmers posting top three finishes. Matthew Johnson (City of Leeds SC) continued to dominate the boys 13 years age group with wins in the 800m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and 200m IM. Phoebe Lenderyou (City of Sunderland SC) won the girls 12 years 100m Butterfly and Daniel Johnson from Middlesboro SC won the boys 14 years 200m IM. Danielle Hall-Jackson (City of Leeds SC) won the girls 13 years 400m Freestyle and Daniel Marshall (Borough of Stockton SC) won the 11 year boys 200m Backstroke and came second in the 100m Freestyle. Ryan Flanagan (Borough of Kirklees SC) achieved two third place finishes, in the 13 year old boys 200m Backstroke and the 200m IM. Alasdair Wright from Newburn SC was third in the boys 11 years 200m IM.
The girls and boys 4 x 100m Freestyle Relays from City of Leeds SC both finished in third place.
